Accept PayPal payments with crypto settlement

Two ways to accept PayPal payments without a PayPal merchant account: US buyers pay from $10 through our card partners, and EU buyers can pay in euros through our payment partner once you are approved.

What is PayPal?

PayPal is one of the oldest and best-known ways to pay online. It dates from the early days of online shopping, and buyers in most countries can open an account. Buyers pay from their PayPal balance, a linked bank account or a saved card, and log in with an email and password instead of typing card details into every shop they use. For many shoppers in the US and Europe it is a button they expect to see.

That familiarity is the reason merchants want it. A buyer who has never held crypto, and has no plans to, can still pay if PayPal is on the page. It works the same on a phone or a laptop, and many shoppers already have an account, so there is nothing new to set up at the moment they decide to buy.

Taking PayPal directly means a PayPal business account, with its own approval, limits and dispute process. With CryptoPayr the buyer still pays with PayPal, but the money reaches you as a settled payment credited in dollars, through one of two routes depending on where the buyer is: the card on-ramp for US PayPal accounts, or Local Payment Methods for buyers paying in euros. Either way, your store keeps one checkout and one balance, and PayPal becomes one more button on it.

How PayPal works on CryptoPayr

For buyers in the US, switch on "Pay by card" in Settings → Payments, and a PayPal button appears for US buyers on payments from $10, card fee included. It works with US PayPal accounts only. The buyer pays on the partner page in a new tab, the partner turns the money into crypto and sends it to the order, and the order is confirmed automatically. You are credited the order amount in USD, minus your processing fee, and the buyer pays the card processing fee on top: the greater of $2.99 or 9% + $1.50.

For buyers in the EU, click "Request access" for Local Payment Methods on the same page. Once our team approves it, EU buyers can pay in euros with PayPal through our payment partner, on orders from €1 to €150, and then paste the order number on the checkout. The buyer pays a 7% + €0.79 service fee on top, and the partner adds its own fee. You are credited the order amount as usual.

How a buyer pays with PayPal

Pick PayPal

A US buyer sees the PayPal button once the payment reaches $10. On approved stores, an EU buyer opens Local Payment Methods and picks PayPal there.

Pay on the partner page

The partner page opens in a new tab. The buyer logs in to PayPal and approves the payment, in dollars or in euros depending on the route.

Paste the order number

On the euro route, the buyer copies the order number they receive and pastes it into your checkout so the payment can be matched to the order.

Order confirmed

On the US route the order is confirmed automatically. On the euro route it is confirmed once the payment is checked, and your store marks it paid.

For merchants

Why merchants offer PayPal

Accept PayPal payments without a business account

Buyers pay the way they already know, and you never apply for a PayPal merchant account or connect one to your store. The money reaches you as a settled payment, credited to your USD balance.

US and European buyers both covered

US PayPal accounts pay from $10 through our card partners. EU buyers pay in euros through our payment partner on orders from €1 to €150, once you are approved for Local Payment Methods.

More than PayPal on the euro route

Local Payment Methods also lets buyers pay in euros by debit or credit card, iDEAL, Bancontact, EPS, BLIK, Skrill or paysafecard, so one approval adds several of Europe's local favorites to your checkout.

The fees sit with the buyer

On the US route the buyer pays the greater of $2.99 or 9% + $1.50 on top. On the euro route they pay 7% + €0.79, plus the partner's own fee. You pay only your normal processing fee.

Disputes stay with the partner

On the US route, a dispute over the payment is between the buyer and the partner that sold them the crypto. You receive a settled crypto payment for the order, and a confirmed blockchain payment is final.

PayPal payments: FAQ

Who can pay with PayPal?

Two groups. Buyers in the US with a US PayPal account see the PayPal button on payments from $10, and it is not shown to buyers elsewhere. And if you are approved for Local Payment Methods, EU buyers can pay in euros with PayPal through our payment partner.

What are the minimum and maximum amounts?

On the US route the PayPal button appears for payments from $10, counting the card fee. On the euro route through our payment partner, orders from €1 to €150 qualify. A larger European order can still be paid by card through Stripe, Transak or Simplex, or with any of the 110+ coins on the same checkout.

What does a PayPal payment cost the buyer?

On the US route the buyer pays a card processing fee on top of the order: the greater of $2.99 or 9% + $1.50. On the euro route the service fee is 7% + €0.79 on top, so a €50 order comes to €54.29 before the partner's own fee.

How am I paid for PayPal orders?

The same way on both routes: you are credited the order amount in your USD balance, minus your normal processing fee of 2%, 1.5% or 1%. The buyer's fees never come out of your sale. From your balance, withdraw in the coin you choose or set automatic payouts.

Can I refund a PayPal buyer?

Yes. Issue the refund from your dashboard or the API. The customer gets an email with a link and enters the crypto address where they want the refund. The order reached you as a crypto payment, so the refund is sent in crypto rather than back to the PayPal account.

Will the buyer need to verify their identity?

On the US route, a partner may ask a first-time buyer to verify their identity. That happens on the partner's page, and CryptoPayr never sees the documents. On the euro route the buyer pays on the partner's page and then gives your checkout the order number.

How do I switch on PayPal?

For US buyers, switch on "Pay by card" in Settings → Payments. For EU buyers paying in euros, click "Request access" for Local Payment Methods on the same page. Our team reviews the request, and once it is approved the Local Payment Methods button appears on your checkout.
