Accept Multibanco payments from buyers in Portugal

Multibanco is how Portugal pays by reference. Buyers pay at any Multibanco ATM or in their online banking, and you are credited the order amount in your USD balance once the payment is confirmed.

What is Multibanco?

Multibanco is Portugal's interbank network, run by SIBS. Besides cash machines it offers payment by reference: the buyer gets an entity number, a reference and the amount, then pays them at any Multibanco ATM or in their bank's app or website. No card details are shared with the shop.

Paying by Multibanco reference is a long-standing habit in Portugal, for online orders as well as bills and taxes. It suits buyers who don't want to use a card online, and those who prefer to pay at an ATM they already trust.

With CryptoPayr you can accept Multibanco payments without a Portuguese payment provider or bank account. Multibanco is part of Local Payment Methods: once our team approves your account, Portuguese buyers can pay by Multibanco reference on our payment partner's page, and you receive the order amount in your USD balance.

How Multibanco works on CryptoPayr

Click "Request access" for Local Payment Methods in Settings → Payments. Once our team approves it, your checkout shows a Local Payment Methods button on orders from €1 to €150. The buyer opens it, chooses Multibanco on our payment partner's page and receives the entity and reference to pay at an ATM or in online banking.

After paying, the buyer pastes the order number into your checkout. The order is marked paid once the payment is confirmed, your store is told automatically, and you are credited the order amount in your USD balance, minus your normal processing fee.

At checkout

How a buyer pays with Multibanco

Choose Local Payment Methods

On your checkout the buyer opens Local Payment Methods instead of picking a coin. It is shown on orders from €1 to €150.

Get a Multibanco reference

On our payment partner's page, opened in a new tab, they choose Multibanco and receive an entity number, a reference and the amount.

Pay at an ATM or online

The buyer pays the reference at any Multibanco ATM or in their bank's app or website.

Paste the order number

Back on your checkout they paste the order number. Once the payment is confirmed, the order is marked paid.

For merchants

Why merchants offer Multibanco

Accept Multibanco payments without a Portuguese bank

You don't need a Portuguese company, bank account or payment provider. One approval in Settings adds Multibanco, alongside MB WAY and the other Local Payment Methods, to your checkout.

For buyers who avoid cards

Multibanco suits Portuguese shoppers who don't want to use a card online. They pay a reference the way they pay their bills.

Credited in USD

Multibanco orders land in your USD balance at the order amount, minus your processing fee of 1%, 0.5% or 0.1% depending on monthly volume. The buyer covers the cost of paying with Multibanco.

Confirmed before you deliver

An order is only marked paid once the payment is confirmed, and your store, plugin or API integration is told automatically, so delivery can start without a manual check.

One checkout for everyone

The same page offers 110+ coins, cards where "Pay by card" is on, and Local Payment Methods, so every buyer sees a way to pay that suits them.

Multibanco payments: FAQ

Who can pay with Multibanco?

Buyers with a Portuguese bank account or access to a Multibanco ATM. They pay through Local Payment Methods, which is shown on your checkout once your account is approved. MB WAY is offered there too.

What are the minimum and maximum amounts?

Local Payment Methods covers orders from €1 to €150. Larger orders can still be paid with any of the 110+ coins, or by card when "Pay by card" is on.

Who pays the fees?

The buyer covers the cost of paying with Multibanco. You pay only your normal processing fee: 1%, dropping to 0.5% above $5,000 a month and 0.1% above $15,000 a month.

How do I get access?

In Settings → Payments, click "Request access" for Local Payment Methods. Our team reviews the request, and once it is approved the button appears on your checkout with Multibanco and the other methods.

How does the order number work?

After paying, the buyer receives an order number. They paste it into the box on your checkout, and we use it to match their payment to your order. Once the payment is confirmed, the order is completed.

How do I get my money out?

Multibanco orders sit in your USD balance. Withdraw to your own wallet in the coin you choose, or set automatic payouts daily, weekly, monthly or when the balance reaches a threshold.
